Here are some real life examples of people who work in the disability services sector.  Read about what it's like to work in the sector, directly from their words.  No one has better experience in the sector than those who work in it!

I have been with our organization for over twenty three years. I feel working in this sector is very emotionally rewarding because of the participants I work with. The participants make our work place worth going to every day. I am happy that, over time, participants’ individual needs are more recognized and goals are being met.

Program Director, Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp.

Working for Deer Park Villa Inc., in a field that I love, with people that I admire and respect on both a professional and personal level makes me feel accomplished and extremely fortunate. I have worked my way up to Chief Executive Officer and feel privileged in gaining the respect and teamwork of my colleagues over the 13 years I’ve been with the company. The most valuable lessons I have learnt in my years with the agency come not from the educational courses I have taken, but rather from the individuals with disabilities themselves, which make working in this field a rewarding experience daily.

Chief Executive Officer, Deer Park Villa Inc.

What I love about my career is the positive impact I have in people’s lives. It is very rewarding to know that the work I do every day is genuinely appreciated by those who are in need of assistance. I have learned a great deal about myself and have developed a greater appreciation for people with disabilities through my employment.

Direct Support Professional, Harvest Community Inc.

I previously worked in the school system with children with disabilities. When I made the move into this position I was really not sure what to expect. Well, now it is 5 years later and I would not have changed a thing about my decision. I love the feeling of knowing that I am making a difference in someone’s life. I cherish the friendships that I have made along the way and know that I am cherished too. I believe whole heartily that people with disabilities are like you and I. We all have gifts to share and it’s been an awesome journey. I look forward to many more years in this field.

Residential Program Coordinator, Southwest Homes

Since working with the residents of Southwest Homes they have taught me much about life. The joy they give to others rises above their disabilities. I have learned to see each person (I have the honour of serving) in a new light. Individually each one has given me something special. The depth of their sincerity is immeasurable. When someone is sad or needs encouragement (being a worker or resident) I find there is no disability in the amount of compassion and comfort they so readily give. Just being there is an accomplishment to me. I love being able to come and be a part of a special home. The people at railway are like family to me. They have given me more then I will ever be able to give them.

Shift Operator, Southwest Homes

Never will you find a career more rewarding professionally or personally that will warm your heart in quite the same way. There’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing you made it possible for knowing the work you do affects so many others lives.

Life Skills Support Worker, Cosmopolitan Learning Centre

I love the diversity of my job, but what I most enjoy is working with such great people!  I have learned so much about perseverance and acceptance of others and life in general from the people who participate in our programs. I love being able to think outside the box and be creative with our programs so that we can change them to suit individuals as needed.

I love working with people and feel it is well suited to my values and my personality to help others.  My job allows me to have a positive impact on people’s lives and that is very rewarding!

Executive Director, Southwest Homes

I enjoy serving the wonderful people that our organization supports. My career does no feel like ‘work’, as I genuinely love spending them with our individuals and feel strongly about the COR philosophy. I believe that every person should be treated the same. I look forward to a day in which terms like ‘disability’ or ‘mental capacity’ are no longer a part of defining a person, and society is accepting of everyone for who they are instead of how they are diagnosed.

Program Coordinator, Creative Options Regina (COR)

Whether clients say it or not, if you treat them with dignity, and support them as best as you can, they will be thankful and appreciative of you. You are doing something worthwhile that will have a lasting impression. There is no better drive or motivation, if only to be a better person each day, and do something that is beyond yourself.
